They Should have Known Better

A lady who died at the Otter Creek CF in Kentucky last year was permitted at the time to refuse medical treatment. The only problem with that is that this woman was mentally ill and refusing treatment for her diabetes. And when someone refuses treatment for reasons connected to their mental illness, the prison has the authority (and responsibility) to mandate treatment.

  1. No they don't. An inmae still has the right to refuse medical treatment for illnesses like diabetes and such. Now schizophrics and illnesses as such are not. When security and well being of others could be put in to harms way that is when they can step in and force medication. Diabetes is not one of those illnesses. If you had diabetes and a mental illness and you were on the streets who has the authoritay and responsibility to mandate treatment on you?
