There was a riot yesterday afternoon in the CCA-run North Folk Correctional Center in Sayre, Oklahoma. Though no staff were injured and no hostages taken, at least 20 prisoners were injured in the disturbance, including one who was stabbed. Of course, the prison couldn't handle the riot itself, and 6 units from the state police had to assist (how's that for privatized public services?)
Here's a bit more on the situation.
UPDATE: At least 46 prisoners were injured in the riot, with at least 16 having to be transported to a hospital to treat their injuries.

ReplyDeleteI'd much rather see a riot take place in a mens prison than, say, people such as the Occupy dirtbags rioting in Oakland. Keep it within the walls of a stinking prison, and nobody will care. That's just the way the public at-large wants it....
ReplyDeleteI don't think a riot is good, no matter where it takes place. Riots in prison are extremely dangerous, to prisoners, staff, and the public at large (should the company or government lose control of the facility). I would not wish the chaos and terror of a riot on anyone, prisoners included.
DeleteI also disagree that "no one will care;" we have far and away the largest, most pervasive criminal justice system in the entire world. with about 8 million people under some sort of correctional supervision, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't know of anyone whose involved in the system. Many of the 2.5 million people in prisons have families, friends, and advocates who care very much for their safety and well-being, and would not want to them suffer unnecessarily.

DeleteI think that the original post is funny. I was there, and no outside agencies helped in controlling the riot. There were some outside just incase, but we took care of business, and took control of the facility.
